Help with health travel costs

You can get financial help with the cost of travel to receive NHS treatment or NHS diagnostic tests under the government funded Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme.

On the NHS website you can find full details of who is eligible to claim, which benefits qualify you to claim and what sort of transport you can use.

You need to pay for your travel first and then if you are eligible, you can claim a refund within 3 months of your appointment.

You can be reimbursed for local bus travel or given a mileage allowance if coming by car. If you needed to pay the ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) charge, you can also complete a form which we send to TFL who refund it to you (see below).

How do I claim a refund?

To claim your travel costs, please email details of your journey and a copy of your appointment letter or card, plus proof that you're receiving one of the qualifying benefits to lg.cashiers@nhs.net

Or you can take your documents to the General Office at the hospital that you attended:

University Hospital Lewisham

General Office, Ground Floor, Admin Zone.

The entrance is on Lewisham High Street, to the left of the Ambulatory Care Centre (Same Day Emergency Care).

Queen Elizabeth Hospital

Cashiers Office, Main Entrance area, opposite Reception.

Reimbursement of the ULEZ charge

As an NHS patient, you may be able to claim a reimbursement of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) daily charge for journeys to and from this hospital.

You may be eligible to claim if you are clinically assessed as too ill, weak or disabled to travel to an appointment on public transport and:

  • Have a compromised immune system
  • Require regular therapy or assessments
  • Need regular surgical intervention

For NHS patients travelling in a vehicle that doesn't meet the ULEZ emissions standards, you'll need to pay the daily ULEZ charge before you can make a claim. You cannot claim for charges you paid after the day of travel or for Penalty Charge Notices. See the Transport for London website for more information.

To make a claim, fill in the form below, reimbursement will take two to four weeks.

If someone else paid the Congestion Charge or ULEZ charge for the journey you made, you can make a claim on their behalf.
