Cancer Service Summary

Acute Oncology Service at University Hospital Lewisham (UHL)

The Acute Oncology Service at UHL aims to provide:

  • Better communication between treating teams
  • Increased patient safety
  • Prevention of unnecessary admissions
  • Reduced length of stay
  • Minimised  unnecessary investigations
  • Improved patient experience
  • Appropriate and prompt referrals to other specialties / hospitals as required

To achieve this, the service provides fast-track clinics, a 24/7 telephone service and specialised management protocols.

Outpatient Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Clinic at University Hospital Lewisham (UHL)

At present there is no official pathway for GPs to refer directly to the DVT Clinic and patients are seen in the Emergency Department. Once the patient has been assessed, if outpatient management is suitable, patients are given scan appointment times with General Ultrasound with a follow up in the DVT Clinic and appropriate anticoagulation is commenced.

Exclusion Criteria for outpatient DVT Clinic:

•Pregnancy or within six weeks of child birth - please refer to obstetrics/gynae
•Suspected bilateral DVT - patient must be seen in A&E
•Suspected upper limb thrombus - scans are carried out in the vascular laboratory
