Sophie Russell elected President of the RCM

Congratulations to Sophie Russell, Head of Midwifery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital who has been elected as the new President of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM). The RCM is the voice of midwifery. It is the only professional organisation and trade union dedicated to serving midwifery and the whole midwifery team. As the President of the RCM, Sophie will be an ambassador for the RCM representing RCM members at national and international events and at social occasions.

Sophie takes over from President Rebeccah Davies and brings eighteen years of midwifery expertise to the post. She was a hugely popular choice, winning by a significant margin.

Sophie Russell, Head of Midwifery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, said: “I am really honoured to have been elected as the new president of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM). I look forward to working with Gill Walton, Royal College of Midwives General Secretary and CEO and pledge that I will represent every member no matter their background or their role. There is so much talent and innovation within maternity services.

I'm looking forward to meeting lots of members over the course of my term and seeing first-hand the outstanding work they do supporting women and their families and sharing that excellence here at LGT. I want to play my part in making sure all families receive personalised and evidence-based care. Being a midwife is a huge privilege and the best job in the world, so representing the RCM as President is an incredibly humbling and exciting challenge. That challenge starts today.”

Shirley Peterson, Divisional Director of Midwifery, Nursing and Governance Women’s, Children and Governance said: "Congratulations to Sophie Russell on her appointment as president of the Royal College of Midwives. This is a fantastic achievement that is well-deserved."
