LGT Star of the Month for August

We are delighted to announce that Sarah Sanders, Highly Specialist Neurology Physiotherapist in the community has been awarded our LGT Star of the Month for August 2024.

Sarah is a physiotherapist in the Bromley Stroke Rehabilitation Team (BSRT). They provide a holistic, needs-based service to our patients and their families after a stroke.

She was nominated for the 'Star Player Award' and here is why: “Our team provides specialist stroke rehabilitation for patients in the borough of Bromley, either in their own homes, nursing homes or residential homes. On weekends, we complete initial assessments over the phone with patients who were discharged from University Hospital Lewisham on a Friday. During a telephone call to a new patient, the patient reported having a fall, declining to go to the hospital, declining to ask for help from anybody in the residential home, and presented over the phone with confusion.

"Sarah comforted the patient, arranged help from the fast response team, and called an ambulance. She supported the patient and remained on the phone due to the patient's confusion; when the ambulance arrived, the patient refused to go to the hospital. The rapid access team and ambulance crew then made the patient feel safe, and they did not need to be taken to the hospital.

"These calls are difficult at any time, but Sarah was able to keep a sense of calmness and support the patient while ensuring that all required additional teams were contacted.

"Sarah made a real impact to the patient's care, preventing a readmission and potentially a long stay. Our team works hard and closely together, and this case has provided us with additional learning. She handled this case with poise and confidence, displaying a great degree of skill, kindness and compassion.”

Sarah was presented with her certificate, a  £100 voucher from LGT, and a  fruit basket donated by Hasan Er, who runs the fruit stall at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Sarah said: “I was surprised to be nominated and shortlisted for the LGT Star of the Month and I am honoured to have received this award.

"I feel uplifted and thankful that my work has been recognised, and I would like to thank my colleagues for nominating me. I work with an exceptional team with colleagues who are dedicated, compassionate and kind. We strive to do our best every day to help our patients and each another. I love working in such a positive environment where success and talent can flourish, and I want to share this special moment with the whole team."

Jessie Gale, Vinci Facilities Manager, who chaired this month’s judging panel commented: “Congratulations to Sarah. She went above and beyond any expectations; her job must be difficult and demanding at times. Sarah supported her patient with empathy and compassion, and she remained on the phone with her patient while planning her care, demonstrating excellent organisation skills. This takes a great deal of courage and demonstrates how much she cares about her job and the patients, who always come first.”
