Celebrations galore for the LGT Maternity team!

The Maternity team at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust have had double-cause for celebration recently; we welcomed our new cohort of internationally trained midwives and celebrated Aida Popescu, LGT’s lead Maternity Support Worker (MSW) receiving a prestigious national award!

Aida – pictured here with Shirley Peterson, LGT’s Director of Midwifery, Nursing & Governance – was awarded the Chief Midwifery Officer Award; presented by Nina Khazaezadeh, Chief Midwife for London. The award recognises Aida being a tireless and tenacious advocate for Support Workers and their professional development. She makes a difference every day and is highly respected amongst peers and the wider maternity team.

The team had organised a celebratory lunch and get together to welcome a new 18-strong cohort of internationally educated midwives. They are all experienced midwives with an impressive skill and knowledge set. They will be a great and much needed addition to the LGT maternity team and contribute to the delivery of safe maternity care to the women and birthing people of Greenwich, Lewisham and Bexley.

The last year has brought much to celebrate for the LGT Maternity team: their latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) report confirmed that the service was ‘Good’ with more ‘Outstanding’ elements than ever, and the team’s approach to flexible working – allowing midwives and MSWs to pick up ships of flexible lengths, and to easily dip into other services to develop their career – has garnered national praise.

Sue Chatterley, Associate Director of Midwifery & Neonatal Services for LGT said: “I am so pleased to be able to welcome the latest additions to the LGT midwifery and maternity family, and I can see that our newly arrived internationally trained colleagues are already making such a positive impact on the service.

“I am incredibly proud of Aida's many achievements and am so grateful for her work with our Support Worker colleagues and the invaluable contribution they make to the maternity service.

“It is a huge privilege to work with so many amazing colleagues.”
