Our Health Improvement Team offer a range of health promotion activities that contribute to improving health and reducing health inequalities in the borough of Lewisham.

Who is the service for?

The service is for everyone who lives, works or studies in Lewisham.

What can we offer?

Free NHS Community Health Checks

If you live in Lewisham and you are aged 40 to 74, you may be eligible for a free NHS Health. The check is FREE, simple and could save your life. Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes or kidney disease.  The good news is that these conditions can often be prevented.  We carry out checks at various venues and events within the borough, or we can book individual appointments at one of our static sites.

Lewisham Health Trainers

Health Trainers are recruited from local communities and work at the earliest stages of a patient/client care pathway to support health related lifestyle change (healthy eating, weight management, alcohol control, physical activity and smoking).  Health Trainers work directly with both individuals and groups from various backgrounds in a variety of different settings, such as Health Centers, GP practices, Libraries and through other community groups

Lewisham Healthy Walks

Lewisham Healthy Walks encourages people to walk more through regular weekly walks, mostly led by trained volunteer walk leaders. They range from gentle walks in a park to wider explorations. We offer walk leader training for people who want to either join our team of volunteer walk leaders or set up a walk for their community organisation.

Vietnamese and Chinese Project

Deptford Vietnamese and Chinese Project aims to improve the health and wellbeing of these Communities in Lewisham.  The project workers provide practical support as well as emotional support.  They will also help with form-filling, translation, advice on welfare benefits, education, housing, health and consumer rights as well as provide mediation and counselling to clients who have emotional difficulties or family conflicts.  

The Older People's Project

The Older Peoples Project works with older people to improve their health and well being and to access health and social care services suitable to their needs.  This is carried out through:  Group work to encourage older people to remain active within their community, Support into exercise to help older people to remain independent,   Nutritional information and support, fall prevention and Signposting to statutory, voluntary and community services

North Lewisham Health Project

The North Lewisham Health Improvement Project aims to engage with a range of local community groups, voluntary organisations and wider stakeholders to promote the uptake of healthy activities, services and screening in North Lewisham.   The project works also works in partnership with small organisations by offering advice, support and small grants opportunities to improve the health and wellbeing of local residents

How are services delivered?

Services are delivered in different ways to ensure there is something to suit everyone.  When you contact us, we will talk you through these methods to identify which is most suitable for you.

Community Drop-in Services

All our services can be assessed at various community settings in Lewisham: libraries, community centres, Lewisham Hospital and leisure centres in Lewisham.  To find out the nearest drop-in to you, why not call us on free phone – 0808 1410 118.and one of the team members will be happy to speak to you.

One-to-One Support Services

One-to-one support is available for all our clients.  Our one-to-one advise session is all  about working with you to identify what changes you are about to make and support you through the process to achieving a healthy lifestyle that suits you.

Group Support

You don’t always have to make changes on your own.  You can join of one of our Shape Up groups which runs for 8 weeks across various venues in Lewisham.  Join people who like you are will to support one another to bring about positives changes to their health.

We can give you the support you need to make it through Stoptober.

Just drop in to one of our Stoptober sessions that we are running throughout the month.
