What conditions are treated by the Nutrition and Dietetics team

The team is able to treat a variety of long-term and acute conditions in adults and children. Their service is often to provided alongside other methods of treatment or management of the condition. 

Adults         

Oncology:
The team provides a nutrition and dietetic service for patients with haematological, colorectal & upper-gastrointestinal, breast, gynaecology, lung, and head & neck cancers

Gastroenterology:
The team provides a service for patients with IBD (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis), diverticular disease, IBS, coeliac disease, food intolerances/allergies, liver disease, pancreatic disease

Diabetes:
Type 1 & 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes. The team also provide Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating (DAFNE) structured education for type 1 diabetes.

Malnutrition
The team provides support and advice for both underweight and overweight patients.

Cystic Fibrosis

Chronic diseases:
The team can provide support for patients with cardiac, renal, HIV and respiratory (TB, COPD) conditions

Nutritional issues associated with stroke  

Bariatric:
The team provide a weight management service and weight loss surgery

Mental health: 
The Nutrition and Dietetics team is working closely with other healthcare professionals at the Trust to develop new and innovative initiatives for patients living with dementia and Alzheimers

Prematurity:
The team can provide support for chronic cardiac and lung conditions of prematurity that compromise growth

Please bring your child's red book (child health record) containing their weight and height measurements to appointments with the nutrition and dietetics service.

What services are provided at Lewisham Hospital 

Inpatients:

The team provide services on most inpatient wards including Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU), Acute Medical Units (AMU) and the High Dependency Unit (HDU)

Nutrition and Dietetic services are provided on all medical, orthopaedic and surgical wards including the gastroenterology ward, oncology ward and cardiology ward. Patients on the stroke and elderly care ward also have access to the service.

For children, the team provide a service for patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and on the Childrens’ Ward as well as the Childrens Day Care Unit

Outpatients:

Diabetes (adult and paediatric) Clinics - patients will be able to see a member of the team alongside other healthcare professionals

What Services are provided in the Lewisham community?

Home Enteral Dietitians (HEN) - the team manage feeding tubes for both adult and paediatric patients

Cancer of Head and Neck Team (CHANT) - dietitians work alongside other healthcare professionals, specialising in providing nutritional advice and support to head & neck cancer patients to support them with living at home.

Oncology- A Macmillan dietitian provides home visits for those on the palliative care pathway within the borough of Lewisham.

Diabetes Clinics - Clinics are held  at Waldron Health centre, Woolstone Medical centre and Marvels Lane clinic. The team also provide Diabetes Education and Self Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed (DESMOND) structured education sessions

Home visits to adult and paediatric diabetes patients can be provided if required.

Adult Weight Management Group

The team also work closely with members of the Adult Cardiac rehab group, CALM (Centre for Active Lifestyle Management) group and Pulmonary Rehab Group to enhance the care and support for patients of these services.

Who are the services for?

Patients who are accessing one of the services mentioned above will be contacted by a member of the nutrition and dietetics team.

Patients who are over 16 will be seen by the adult nutrition and dietetics team.

Patients who are under 16 will be seen by the paediatric nutrition and dietetics team.

Young people with special needs, and young people with diabetes will be seen by the paediatric team until the age of 19.

Where are Nutrition and Dietetic services located?

Inpatients

If you are an inpatient at Lewisham Hospital, a member of the team will visit your ward.

Outpatients

Adults:
General, Bariatric, Diabetes and Gastroenterology Clinics are held in suite 9 across the week - please contact a the dietetic office on 020 8333 3314 for days and times.

Oncology clinics are held in Suite 8 - please contact a the dietetic office on 020 8333 3314 for days and times.

Paediatrics
Outpatient clinics (allergy, general, diabetes) are held in Kingfisher department.

Children with diabetes and children with special needs will have their appointment in Kaleidoscope.

Please note, you must be referred to the service by your GP or hospital doctor.

Please note that patients cannot refer themselves directly to this service.

Patients should be referred by their GP or hospital consultant, ward nurse or specialist nurse.
