3 June 2016: Library Open Day is coming!

You are warmly invited to our Library & Knowledge Services Open Day on Tuesday 21 June 2016 from 11am-3pm! The Open Day will be held in the Practical Suite, Education Centre, QEH where our resource suppliers will be on hand to demonstrate the many information products available to support your work and learning here at LGT. Lunch will be provided and there will be quizzes, freebies and prize giveaways including £25, £30 and £50 Amazon vouchers, 2 copies of the Royal Marsden Manual and 2 free personal subscriptions to any Mark Allen Group title. 18 May 2016: Learning at Work Week

16th-20th May 2016 is Learning at Work Week and Library Services and other colleagues will be marking the occasion with stands at QEH and UHL tomorrow, Thursday 19 May. Come by and chat to the Library team at the International Nurses Day celebrations at UHL in the Lessof Auditorium (9.30am-12.30pm) and outside the canteen at QEH (11am-2pm). Find out about the learning resources available to you and pick up some freebies!

3 May 2016: New training courses for Spring/Summer 2016

Spring is often a good time to start something fresh, so why not book into one of our training courses and learn something new this season? Library and Knowledge Services offer courses in doing literature reviews, evidence-based information resources, critical appraisal, reference management and searching healthcare databases.  Please see our Training section for more info.

22 April 2016: UpToDate has been renewed

We are pleased to report that the contract for UpToDate has been renewed for the Trust until 2019.  If you would like to see how UpToDate is being utilised at the Trust please see our UpToDate infographic (viewed best on Firefox or Chrome browsers).

18 January 2016: Be a better searcher in 2016!

Library Services are pleased to announce the new timetable for group training courses running from Jan-May 2016.  If you have resolved this year to make your practice more evidence-based, carry out a research/audit project, write a literature review or get to grips with critical appraisal then these courses are for you.  Find out more on our Training page.

16 October 2015: Have you ever dreamed of getting published?

Have you ever considered getting your work published in a research journal?  Do you have a great idea for an article but don't know where to start?

Get tips, advice and inspiration with our "Getting Published" workshops from Library Services, taking place this autumn!  These workshops are open to all LGT staff and students on placement, clincial and non-clinical.  Topics covered will include:

  • Overcoming barriers to writing
  • What makes a good paper
  • Where you can publish work

There will be published authors on hand to offer advice and support - no experience is necesary!

Dates and locations: Friday 23 October 2015, 10am-12pm (Lewisham Hospital) and Monday 23 November 2015 10am-12pm (Queen Elizabeth Hospital)

1 June 2015: Oxford Medicine Online ebooks

Following a successful trial we are pleased to announce that we have purchased 65 titles from Oxford Medicine Online, including many Oxford Handbooks and Specialities titles.  Access is via OpenAthens for all staff/students on placement at Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust and the quickest route is via http://oxfordmedicine.com/.  Just click Login with Athens/Access Management Federation and choose NHS England as your institution.  You can then search for the ebook you want, or browse by specialty.  Contact us if you have further questions about this resource.

14 May 2015: Knowledge Awareness / Learning at Work Week

Workforce and Education, Library Services and Medicines Information would like to invite you to join us as we celebrate a week of learning, education, training and professional development during Knowledge Awareness / Learning at Work Week!  This year's theme is "Shaping our future" and there are events and activities planned to help you make the most of learning opportunities, services and resources here at the Trust.

  • Weds 20 May 2015: Lewisham (12.30-13.30)
  • Find out more about UpToDate and how it can benefit your practice over a sandwic before Grand Round.  Library Services will also be on hand to tell you about other resources to support your work and professional development.
  • Thurs 21 May 2015: Queen Elizabeth (11.30 - 13.30)
  • Promotional stands outside the canteen.  Come and chat with your colleagues in Workforce and Education, Library Services and Medicines Information about the free learning opportunities, training and resources available to you.

1 May 2015: UpToDate renewed at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust

We are pleased to announce our subscription to UpToDate has been renewed for another year.  Our usage statistics show you are making good use of UTD on site, but did you know you have added benefits that allow you to access UTD off-site and even on your smartphone/tablet via the UpToDate app?  Please see our eResources page for further details and continue to make use of UTD for all your clinical queries - with more than 10,000 topics in 22 specialities you are sure to find the answer.  And if you login before you run a search your searches will be recorded in future for re-use and revalidation.

16 Mar 2015: Changes to HDAS: Medline and PsycINFO

By now you should have received a communication from NICE regarding changes to some of the resources from 1 April 2015 and the actions you have to take before the switchover.  The most important thing is to make sure you download and save all your searches run in Medline and PsycINFO before 8am on 30th March 2015.  If you do not all your searches/alerts will be lost and cannot be retrieved.  For more information please see http://bit.ly/1EZjeMt or contact your library services team.  We will keep users updated as changes progress.

6 Feb 2015: Support for doctor revalidation and appraisal

There are only a few weeks left to complete your annual appraisal in order to comply with GMC revalidation regulations.  The good news is that there are lots of resources and services available from Library Services to help you with this process.

  • High quality scanning (QEH only) and photocopying facilities for thos all-important documents and certificates
  • Free access to BMJ Learning if you need to pick up a few more CPD points!
  • Free e-resources such as UpToDate, Dynamed and over 7,000 e-journal titles to show evidence of continuous learning
  • 10,000+ case reports free online with BMJ Case Reports
  • Books and e-books on professional development and good medical practice for doctors
  • Organise your references and produce bibliographies quickly and easily with RefWorks
  • Free access to the whole of Oxford Medicine Online until 28 Feb 2015.

2 Feb 2015: Healthcare Library at QEH now open until 7pm four days a week

The Library Services at QEH are pleased to announce extended late opening on Tuesdays until 7pm.  The new changes will take effect week beginning Monday 2nd February 2015.

New opening hours:

  • Monday to Thursday: 9am to 7pm
  • Friday: 9am to 5pm
  • Saturday: 9am to 2pm

We have made these changes as a result of user feedback and will run these opening hours on a trial basis.  Footfall will be monitored to determine usage so we encourage you to make use of the library!

22 Jan 2015: Enhanced Access to Library Resources

Equity of access to online library and knowledge resources has been achieved at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.  Queen Elizabeth Healthcare Library and Lewisham Hospital Library have merged their OpenAthens organisational identities, providing a single login for users to all resources across both sites.

3 Jun 2014: Access to more e-Journals through an NHS pilot

Over 2400 more e-journals have been made available to all NHS staff from April 2014 to March 2015.  The titles mostly reflect journal content licensed for the UK Higher Education academic sector, and is now being extended to NHS users.  Eight major academic publishers are taking part, including Nature, Oxford University Press, Elsevier and Springer.


Most titles are available from anywhere via Open Athens password. If you need to register for Open Athens, or have forgotten your login details, please visit the OpenAthen NHS website here.

However titles from Nature, Institute of Physics and Oxford University Press are only accessible from any NHS computer without a password.

A-Z Journals: Go to the NICE Journals and Databases website here then browse or search titles. Further details are available here

Access beyond March 2015 will depend on how much the titles are used this year, so please do make use of them.
