HIV

  general consultation

HIV is a treatable infection these days - that's why we encourage everyone to take an HIV test from time to time, as people getting sick from HIV or developing AIDS can be prevented. Treatment for people who haven't needed it before can be as simple as one pill per day - with suprisingly few side-effects.

HIV medications need to be taken every day and sometimes this can be difficult. We have a specialist Pharmacist who is here to help. You can book an appointment to see the Pharmacist via the receptionist, just call 020 8836 6969. We recommend you see the Pharmacist if you starting treatment for  the first time or if you are chaging an existing treatment plan. The pharmacy team can explain how the medicines work, suggest ways to deal with possible side effects, give ideas on how to remember to take your medicines, and the can also check that the HIV medicines are safe to take with any other medicines you may be using, or want to use. Please tell us about all your other medicines, including herbal products, and recreational drugs.

For interactions between HIV medications and other drugs check out www.hiv-druginteractions.org

People with HIV can sometimes feel a little low or depressed, or may have problems with their memory. We also have a Psychologist here to help, ask your doctor or nurse if you would like to be referred.

If you are HIV positive and you are unwell when we are not open, please go to the Accident and Emergency Department. Tell them that we look after your HIV and the doctor on call will be able to make sure you get the best care.
